surrendering to change….inviting grace….

welcome to your life as it changes..

what will walk through the door? who will be on the other side? who will you be on the other side?….how about after meeting the courage to walk through to the other side again & again?

You cannot rely on anything. Things change. Ok, so this is where your choices begin. We can’t escape life’s essential problems, but we can change our understanding about them. We can practice reframing, generosity, and gratitude. The evanescence of things is the real reason you enjoy your life……………….Lewis Richmond

it’s a wondrous approach to life….to think that we have the ‘control’ we need by ‘surrendering’ is a wild paradox…… & it always comes back to the heart…

When we rest in the heart, we inhabit the present moment fully. We have a choice of what to think, how to feel, & when to act. It can be said that the more we want life to show up a certain way, the less chance it will. We have to surrender what we know to discover what we don’t know. We see that things are always changing. Peaks become valleys. Sadness yields to joy. And as we surrender more & more, we attract grace into our lives. The love & compassion, clarity & wisdom of the divine express through our open hearts……Paul Ferrini

can we be visionaries? seeing into the wisdom of our own lives? can we come to terms with what is most human in our lives? do we know how to take ‘time-outs’ from catastrophic changes in our lives, just letting them be what they will for awhile before reacting to them?…do we know in our hearts that ‘all shall be well?’

gothic tombs of infinite bliss

After long searches here & there, in temples & in churches, in earths & in heavens, at last you come back, completing the circle from where you started, to your own soul & find that He/She, for whom you have been seeking all over the world, for whom you have been weeping & praying in churches & temples, on whom you were looking as the mystery of all mysteries shrouded in the clouds, is nearest of the near, is your own Self, the reality of your life, body & soul……Swami Vivekenanda

our whole life competes against presence….we struggle through the tombs of our experience…alighting on every little snag….every inevitable wave of ignorance, fear, stress, anxiety or depression….we do not accept the fact that life is difficult….we know, but we do not accept….

Ajahn Chah says. ‘Try to do everything with a mind that lets go…’ Every moment of witnessing brings us to a full life in our body. We naturally feel our interconnectedness with other beings. In these precious moments, we awake from the dream of separation & striving, & we experience the hidden depths of life. We experence the essence of all spirituality: generosity, gratitude, & love. And in these moments of transparency we feel more real than ever…..Stephen Cope

kissing your own heart first

topsy turvy heart desires

Our task as we move beyond modernism might be to perceive the poetry, the spirituality, & the mystery in all forms of relationship, understanding that both the joys & the trials constitute an education in the soul. We might also stand against current values & realize deeply & seriously that a good friend is perhaps more valuable than a good job, that a genuine marriage of hearts means more than success, & that the endings, failures, arguments, divorces & ruptures that are so painful in the pursuit of intimacy have their mysterious necessity….Thomas Moore

kissing our own hearts first….that we may know this deep inner work of life-living vulnerability, this heart to soul transcendence… identity without self-possession…without compartmentalizing….no boundaries between heart & soul….

Have you quieted your mind & softened your heart? Are you willing to take responsibility for what you want, for your heart’s desire- to be genuine in communication, & to deal consciously with conflict? Have you made deep peace with the wisdom of sacrifice? Then at some point- & only you will know when- you must leap. Take a leap of passion & faith. You will feel scared & lonely- aware of all the other choices that you passed up, unsure of yourself & the future- but when you commit your whole self to a wise decision, you will also feel abiding peace, incredible strength, & deep happinesss. Life will feel more alive. Fun will feel more fun. Pain will feel more painful. You will be, in the words of Chogyam Trungpa, ‘a king or queen with a broken heart,’ ruling your world, sobered by reality, exuberant, fearless, & compassionate……Elizabeth Lesser

a profound statement for sure….sorting out your heart’s passages, finding your voice through your heart….learning what kindness means…not just what kindness ‘is’….

grace & gravity….the trenches of grit

your fluffy, marshmallow mind

All the natural movements of the soul are controlled by laws analagous to those of physical gravity.

Grace is the only exception.

We must always expect things to happen in conformity with the laws of gravity, unless there is supernatural intervention….Simone Weil

this sweet floating of grace is healing in motion…a magical lilt of indurance, grit, faith….

it may seem like the most precious of angel’s gifts at first…but no…the realization hits hard….we need much more than gifts….we need rock hard will & determination & a never-give-up fierceness to navigate the trenches of the everyday…

you have that gift already….you always have Grace in your pocket…

remember…& be grateful….

We have all experienced moments of apparently sudden understanding. They can happen anywhere: in conversation with a friend, driving a car, sitting on the subway, walking along a country path, in church. We know something is happening because everything changes. We are stopped; the quality of attention sweetens; something descends…music, a scent, a meaning. Behind it , it seems, can be anything; a memory an insight, or the sensed presence of an angel. Grace. Gratitude, as Rilke well knew, is the only appropriate response.

If the angel at your table suddenly

makes up his mind, Be quiet;

gently smooth the few wrinkles

in the cloth beneath your bread.

Then offer him your crude food

Let him taste it in this turn

and raise to his pure lips

A simple everyday glass.

it’s all okness somehow….

profound intent & the journey of devotion

the sweet mystery

a spiritual sister’s words resonate…..

The intention to live according to Buddhist precepts has had a profound effect & created a holding within which the spiritual has become integral to the everyday: an embodied, engaged spirituality. From a younger need for intensity & extreme experience I seem to have moved into a certain level of simplicity, where “chopping wood & carrying water” have become the staple of the spiritual life. Here, a place of needing less & appreciating more, deep experiences of interconnectedness take their place & are making sense of the Christian message as I am hearing it afresh going to my local church. While some of the language feels dualistic, the underlying meaning & experience is of untiy. I sometimes struggle with the forms Christian worship takes, & at the same time feel rooted by the sense of tradition & community in the Christian tradition. I would dearly like to find some gathering of friends where I would no longer need to ‘reinterpret’ the language of the Christian religion to make it possible for me to relate it to my embodied experience……Maxine Linnell

beautifully written & almost pleading…..where can we truly & gently find connection?….how do we choose gracefully? how do we engage with religion in community? ….a sincere wish to soften boundaries calls up our intent…

all of us have deeply personal stories centered around our ideals…our unique histories….our old souls ruminating….together…always together…

I offer a poem….

When the Little Bird Sings

This chromed edge of prayer

echoed under my breath,

has a yielding rhythm, centuries old,

a cadence not unlike

my grandmother’s rosary beads.

With intentional serenity of knees

under heart, my head bowed,

the hard shell of pity blossoms,

indescribable without sweet scent;

Padre Pio’s roses lift despair.

I imagine this is eternity’s gift,

a lilt in the soul, like morning glow

dissolving edges, reminding the weary

to look up with shadowed grace

when the little bird sings.

ode to the ineffable….
