Meditation is about deep listening. What needs to be understood will come if you sit quietly. It is like going into the forest and finding a little clearing and sitting down. If you’re quiet for a while, the animals, the birds, they all resume their life and you see all the things you would never see before.

In the description of insights that are classically born of meditation practice, one is known as knowledge and vision of what is path and what is not-path. What should we trust? What can we rely on? Within the context of formal meditation, this insight is a reminder not to be distracted by shiny things—by bright lights or lovely visions—but to keep practicing by paying attention, being mindful, until we are abiding in equanimity or peace. Don’t settle for low-hanging fruit. Those experiences, like all experiences, come and go, and are exciting and lovely, but also beside the point of being free.
