The First Noble Truth of Suffering is this: Birth is suffering; aging is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow & lamentation, pain, grief, & despair are suffering; association with the unpleasant is suffering; disassociation from the pleasant is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering….What lies at the root of all sorrow, then is the delusory notion of an ego (I)…..that ‘I am here, & what is not me is out there’ & the concomitant dualism of self & other. It is therefore not the ‘world’ or its transitions which is the cause of suffering but our attitude towards it, our clinging to it, our thirst, our ignorance………….Philip Kapleau…..The Zen of Living & Dying
And surrounding all of this is the pure joy inherent in living…..call it an esoteric enigma or the perfect paradox.
Does this mean we feel the pure joy? Do we have to stay stuck in the dualism?
Can we bring this seemingly obscure teaching to our day to day troubles?
So big….this window to the outside…..while such minute workings of the soul on the inside…
Oh, the faux intensity & the laughable revelations…..
Forgive my gushing, blushing, crushing crimes in soulwork……
A little fresh air & a jeweled mirror to keep the suffering away….
