an act of deliberate joy

Heaven’s-Gate Mountain

Mountains set apart over the river,

two peaks face each other. Reflecting

chill colors of shoreline pine, waves

shatter apart into rock-torn bloom.

Heaven’s distant borders ragged,

haze beyond clear sky and flushed cloud,

the sun sinks, a boat far off leaving

as I turn my head, deep in azure mist.

Developing your own taste in art can help bring intelligence and discernment to your spirituality. You may gain a deeper perspective, partly because you move away from the generic taste of the masses. You come into your own and discover for yourself what life is about and how it works. Art doesn’t automatically create a more intelligent spirituality, but it can be a major instrument in that process. Art allows us to see the invisible layers of meaning that we experience in our everyday lives but are hidden or subliminal. In that way, art reveals to us important secrets about ourselves and our world. It shows us what is usually felt but invisible, experienced but not heard. It serves spirituality and sometimes even seems to be an essential part. Sometimes artfulness is more important that mindfulness…….Thomas Moore

wounds heal through a sanguine and uncaged softness…..to create is to make space for not-knowing, to allow time for that healing….to create is to allow what the self requires…..in whatever form that uniqueness calls…..to create is be with this life…..

To be creative is to be, or to strive to be, intensely alive, intensely conscious. This is why joy accompanies the act of creativity. Since genuine creativity is characterized by an intensity of awareness and heightened consciousness, what the artist feels in doing art is felt very intensely. What is at the heart of the artist’s feelings? Rollo May analyzes it this way: ‘What the artist or creative scientist feels is not anxiety or fear; it is joy…..The artist, at the moment of creating, does not experience gratification or satisfaction….Rather it is joy, joy defined as the emotion that goes with heightened consciousness, the mood that accompanies the experience of actualizing one’s own potentialities.’ I would go further that that. I would insist that what the artist is experiencing is far more than ‘actualizing one’s own potentialities’- it is experiencing the Divine joy itself. An intensity accompanies creativity, and this intensity is directed to the world, that is to isness itself, to being, to what is, to creation, to life itself…….Matthew Fox

  1. To create is our purpose … As we created our our being, through our parents, so too we create our own lives, our experience of the world around us. Some would have us believe we are given to fate, driven by a ‘karma’ that has usurped our very own free will. Whether it be brick and mortar, paint and canvas, pen and ink, family, friends, or business, life is truly always about creation, refining our own divinity. There is no place in the universe that gives us, as divine sparks, the ability to experience creation first hand, and in every moment know its effects … Aren’t our regrets, simply bliss showing us our imperfections?

    • creating is a unique form of choice…….a place to allow and to also hold those regrets…..I always tell myself, ‘put the tough stuff in the path to be worked with’…..creativity flows from there…..no wonder it is so healing…..thanks for this wise feedback g.f.s…..

  2. Reminded of words from one of my favorites ~

“Every day we slaughter our finest impulses. That is why we get a heartache when we read those lines written by the hand of a master and recognize them as our own, as the tender shoots which we stifled because we lacked the faith to believe in our own powers, our own criterion of truth and beauty. Every man, when he gets quiet, when he becomes desperately honest with himself, is capable of uttering profound truths. We all derive from the same source. there is no mystery about the origin of things. We are all part of creation, all kings, all poets, all musicians; we have only to open up, only to discover what is already there.” ~ Henry Miller

    the window is held open
    by a breath
    of morning breeze –
where wrapped we were by one
    another time
    yellow blossoms break
    across an endless
    open sky –
    robins sing and worry not
    for rhyme

    • spring is such an opportunity to throw the windows open wide…..to allow it all to rush in, bathing us in the nuance of our own desperate knowing…..HM certainly felt the pull of the wild…..when the robins sing, sing back Bobbie…..
