the ordinary power of fresh perspective

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes,

but when we look back everything is different.

….. C.S. Lewis

our sights are so fixed when we forget to move, when we forget to give, when we forget who we are……groovin’ on into the colored world is the risk of this life…..may its gifts abide…..

When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.

But it, too, seemed immovable.

As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.

And now, as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realize: If I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family.

From their inspiration and encouragement, I would then have been able to better my country, and who knows, I may have even changed the world.

….Written on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop in Westminster Abby

remembering closed doors

It doesn’t interest me if there is one God
or many gods.
I want to know if you belong or feel
if you can know despair or see it in others.
I want to know
if you are prepared to live in the world
with its harsh need
to change you. If you can look back
with firm eyes,
saying this is where I stand. I want to know
if you know
how to melt into that fierce heat of living,
falling toward
the center of your longing. I want to know
if you are willing
to live, day by day, with the consequence of love
and the bitter
unwanted passion of your sure defeat.
I have heard, in that fierce embrace,
even the gods speak of God.

  1. Gazing at the night sky are we under the stars, or are they under us? By changing one thing in myself, I change the whole world – Butterflies and thoughts of grace for your world today …

    • nothing quite like the sensual world to teach us to soak in the sun and the stars to our deepest core…..loving the topsy turvy world g.f.s…..

  2. Funny, isn’t it? As we age, our perspective changes. Just today, someone was commenting on a tunic I’m wearing, and I recollected I had owned it for nearly 20 years. It doesn’t seem that long, and yet it is……..which caused me to immediately think of how fast the next 20 would pass. A sweet silent prayer that the tunic holds out. 🙂 ❤

    • life has so much more meaning now…..slow and rich and sweet…..much bigger and spacious, holding all of those small moments…..a tapestry of chaos, care, and curiosity……your tunic holds your ‘becoming’ Bobbie…..

  3. When outside seems not to change in substantial ways…we always change so soulfully within…we blossom more and more as we learn to love and embrace the wonderful and distinct differences which others bring into our lives each day….making life all the more beautiful!

    • such a fresh perspective! our entwinement teaches us about interconnectedness in deeper ways than we can know…..with gratitude and blessings…..
