When we can hold opposing qualities within our nature in responsible and balanced ways, we develop personal character and increase our relationship skills. Our negative and positive shadows represent those aspects of ourselves that we dislike and often project onto others, and those desirable qualities we have not yet accepted or integrated. In order to do shadow work, we must first recognize that all the qualities we see in others are already present within ourselves. As we integrate all these qualities, they can come into the light. Once we acknowledge them, we can befriend them and discover new ways to be in relationship. Integrating the shadows adds dimension to who we are. ~Angeles Arrien
