We grow accustomed to the Dark-
When Light is put away-
As when the Neighbor holds the Lamp
To witness her Good bye-
A Moment- We Uncertain step
For newness of the night-
Then- fit our Vision to the Dark-
And meet the Road- erect-
And so of larger- Darknesses-
Those Evenings of the Brain-
When not a Moon disclose a sign-
Or Star- come out- within-
The Bravest- grope a little-
And sometimes hit a Tree
Directly in the Forehead-
But as they learn to see-
Either the Darkness alters-
Or something in the sight
Adjusts itself to Midnight-
And Life steps almost straight.
when we hear that possibility is more than a passing night of hope….

At bottom the whole concern of both morality and religion is with the manner of our acceptance of the universe. Do we accept it only in part and grudgingly, or heartily and altogether? Shall our protests against certain things in it be radical and unforgiving, or shall we think that, even with evil, there are ways of living that must lead to good? If we accept the whole, shall we do so as if stunned into submission- or shall we do so with enthusiastic assent?
