how we remember our days.jpg

The virgin point within the heart is like a pure diamond blazing with the invisible light of heaven. It is in everybody And if we could see it we would see these billions of points of light coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely- the Gate of Heaven is everywhere.

~Thomas Merton

when you become fierce about what you know to be true….

inquiry for today~   where is the silence within you? not so much about peacefulness, but about clarity…..that diamond edge where you can then find peace…..

The 20th century monk and poet Thomas Merton drew from the Sufis to describe the point-vierge- the “virgin point” of the soul- the part of ourselves deep within the heart that is untouched by our daily fears and anxieties, the place in which God dwells. This inner witness is our calm core, the place within us of infinite compassion and curiosity about our experience. When we move into silence and we begin to notice the inner voices rising up, it is our inner witness that can observe this dialogue without getting caught up int the emotional drama of it. Cultivating an awareness of this dimension takes practice. We enter into contemplative ways of praying to access this brilliance within us, to rest into our own hearts and discover there the heart of God. When making the space within ourselves to experience the full range of what wants to move and open, we also make room for the difficult and challenging aspects of our humanity.
