It might feel hard to start a journey of self-love. But we can begin by letting the story of life continue around us and within us. This will help us let the story of our life keep unfolding, the way a river will carry a fish downstream.
For pain and fear, by their very nature, stop life’s unfolding. Without self-love
and the love of others, we can get stuck in any moment of pain and fear. Such stuckness is known as trauma. And an enduring part of healing is to let enough life in so that our story can soften and keep unfolding, the way surf will cover and soften the driest patch of sand.
And while being wholehearted and seeing clearly are talents of being we are born
with, we need to develop and devote ourselves to practicing these innate gifts. For though no one needs to tell us how to breathe, there are centuries of meditation and yogic practices to let breathing center us in the Mystery of Life.
Heartfulness and clarity are sorely needed in our time, as in every time, perhaps
more than ever. For heartfulness and clarity helps us grow. And everywhere I look, I can see so many good people growing in the modern cracks. You think I’m too optimistic.
I’m more wave and particle, more botanical. Look at all the flowers and weeds growing
out of stone all over the world. Look at all the slivers of light illuminating dark rooms in the alleys of every city. They find each other: the flowers and the cracks, the light and the hidden. You and me. Trust it.

How many times have you noticed that it’s the little quiet moments in the midst of life
that seem to give the rest extra-special meaning?
