big sky simplified

it’s been said we cannot comprehend from where we came….

Things aren’t all so tangible & sayable as people would usually have us believe; most experiences are unsayable, they happen in a space that no word has ever entered, & more unsayable than all other things are works of art, those mysterious existences, whose life endures beside our own small, transitory life….Rilke

these cracks of light feel auditory, sublime, & limitless…..they are the source of expression, striving, pleasure, & fragility…like a meditation, light & space & humanness ease our cycles of worry & fear….

our insights invite us to rest in receiving pain like some insufficiency of spirit….like big sky & moon & sun, we have more than we realize to depend on…..may we remember to look up….

God, like the sun, emanates on all: on the hill exposed in the open, on the plant growing in the window, even on the weed getting cracks of light under the porch. The same source of spirit emanates on our different lives, regardless of our circumstance. Thus our experience & perception of God in the world may be limited & different, may even change, but that doesn’t define or limit the Source. And though the sun appears to disappear every day, it is the Earth that turns away, causing night. Likewise, when it appears that God is nowhere to be found, it is we, in the turmoil of our lives, who turn away or are turned away & back, again & again. But unlike weeds that grow under the porch, we can move back into light……Mark Nepo

from where we came….

The vastness of this endless sky

is reflected in the corner of an eagle’s eye.

In just this way, the heart

when lifted up, reflects the Universe.

  1. Leaving our hearts open to the light, even though our eyes may be temporarily blinded xx

  2. I agree with Jane, and would add that the ancient saying “as above, so below” is so well depicted in these passages. We often forget that like the universe around us, we are a universe of light in ourselves, and can and do create our own eclipse of sun and moon. Thank you…

    • Love the imagery of creating our own eclipse….key word being ‘create’…so powerful to direct our small selves within the great mysteries….it’s ok to be small, to not know, & to move with only faith by our side…it does not mean we are powerless…..thanks g.f.s….keep finding the light….

  3. My favorite phrase in this post is “cracks of light”–for that is what my most powerful experiences of God are–cracks of light piercing my soul and remaining wordless and unsayable yet very much “doable” re: my actions towards others!

    • Thanks for sharing your courage….to take ‘responsiiblity’ in spite of the unsayable & inexplicable is noteworthy I think….we just ‘know’ somehow don’t we?…..Blessings…..

    • Love having you…..camping in a blog is a clever act of camaraderie….will share a little lakefront space anytime…..thanks Russell….
