If we are longing for the truth, wholeheartedly, the true master will find us. The master will appear in many forms, including circumstances and challenges, like the story of someone being awakened to the truth by overhearing the recitation of prayers. On the other hand, if we are looking for security, approval, and belief systems, most probably we will run into the wrong kind of master. Then we will be enslaved instead of being set free. When we are doing that, we are not aware of it. Usually we are looking for those things unconsciously. There is a glimpse of the oneness that can unfold right now. This has to do with the fact that oneness is always here, and freely available. It is the source from which all things arise, and the home into which all things dissolve. It is the ground of everything- life, death, openness, contracting, happiness, sorrow, light, darkness. It’s actually here, right now. It’s here and it’s over there. It is intrinsically holy in itself, not in a dualistic sense, not holy versus unholy, but holy because it is perfect as it is……Anam Thubten
this grace we seek finds us in the unusual moments that are so ordinary we miss them every time……there is no striving there….there is this…..this spacious now…..
There were no formerly heroic times, and there was no formerly pure generation. There is no one here but us chickens, and so it has always been: a people busy and powerful, knowledgeable, ambivalent, important, fearful, and self-aware; a people who scheme, promote, deceive, and conquer; who pray for their loved ones, and long to flee misery and skip death. It is a weakening and discoloring idea, that rustic people knew God personally once upon a time- or even knew selflessness or courage or literature-but that it is too late for us. In fact, the absolute is available to everyone in every age. There never was a more holy age than ours, and never a less. In any instant the sacred may wipe you with its finger. In any instant the bush may flare, your feet may rise, or you may see a bunch of souls in a tree. In any instant you may avail yourself of the power to love your enemies; to accept failure, slander, or the grief of loss; or to endure torture. Purity’s time is always now. Purity is no social phenomenon, a cultural thing whose time we have missed, whose generations are dead, so we can only buy Shaker furniture……Annie Dillard
Dualistic people use knowledge, even religious knowledge, for the purposes of ego enhancement, shaming, and the control of others and themselves, for it works very well in that way. Nondual people use knowledge for the transformation of persons and structures, but most especially to change themselves and to see reality with a new eye and heart. They hold and suffer the conflicts of life instead of passing them on or projecting them elsewhere. They do not get rid of life’s pain until they learn its necessary lessons. Such a holding tank that agrees to hold it all, eliminating nothing, is what I mean by living in the naked now and being present outside the mind……Richard Rohr
