the inner well

Listen: there was once a king sitting on his throne. Around Him stood great and wonderfully beautiful columns ornamented with ivory, bearing the banners of the king with great honor. Then it pleased the king to raise a small feather from the ground, and he commanded it to fly. The feather flew, not because of anything in itself but because the air bore it along. Thus am I, a feather on the breath of God.

~Hildegard of Bingen

when I meet myself in sky and wind….

inquiry for today~ how will you remember to be outside today?

blue dreams

I thought the earth remembered me,

she took me back so tenderly, arranging her dark skirts, her pockets full of lichens and seeds.

I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed, nothing between me and the white fire of the stars

but my thoughts and they floated light as moths among the branches of the perfect trees.

All night I heard the small kingdoms breathing around me, the insects,

and the birds who do their work in the darkness.

All night I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling with a luminous doom.

By morningI had vanished at least a dozen times

’into something better.
