We were made to enjoy music, to enjoy beautiful sunsets, to enjoy looking at the billows of the sea and to be thrilled with a rose that is bedecked with dew. Human beings are actually created for the transcendent, for the sublime, for the beautiful, for the truthful- and all of us are given the task of trying to make this world a little more hospitable to these beautiful things….Desmond Tutu
sacred space lies in the vulnerable meaning behind the small bits of our lives….the tender and radiant space between who we want to be and who we really are…..this is where all the trust and real beauty pools…..the human refuge beyond illusion…..
There are many marvelous stories of potters in ancient China. In one of them a noble is riding through town and he passes a potter at work. He admires the pots the man is making; their grace and a kind of rude strength in them. He dismounts from his horse and speaks with the potter. ‘How are you able to form these vessels so that they possess such convincing beauty?’ ‘Oh,’ answers the potter, ‘you are looking at the mere outward shape. What I am forming lies within. I am interested only in what remains after the pot has been broken’….M.C. Richards
Four Tao philosophers as cedar waxwings
chat on a February berrybush
in sun, and I am one.
Such merriment and such sobriety-
the small wild fruit on the tall stalk-
was this not always my true style?
Above an elegance of snow, beneath
a silk-blue sky a brotherhood of four
birds. Can you mistake us?
To sun, to feast, and to converse
and all together- for this I have abandoned
all my other lives.
…Robert Francis
These are the places I love. If I get a bit burdened with traffic, gas prices, attitudes, etc., I force myself (remind myself) to slow down – to see beyond the black and white into the colors that are life – where beauty rests awaiting our find.
Just this morning, I was frustrated with traffic when I rounded a curve and spotted something in the road. I knew what it was, even as I swerved to miss. I probably drove another mile before turning around. There are some who would say I took great risk in dodging traffic to rescue (and ferry) a small terrapin from one side of the road to another, but yet in that moment (that still fragile moment) I found myself – as you say, pooling in the place beyond illusion.
Thank you, Blue. ~ Me
